The Poetry
The Journey
The gift of poetry has truly been a joy in my life. I believe that following my heart and passion to work with young people opened the door for this gift to flow. I spent a lot of time enjoying the spoken word at Philadelphia venues in the 90’s in places such as the October Gallery and Jill Scott’s 3801 Café. At that time, there was a talented group of poets sharing in the Philadelphia circuit. Although I was often encouraged to write, I had not yet found my “voice” or my “flow” so my writing was few and far between.
In 2002, while doing my daughter’s hair, the words of the poem, To My Mentees With Love started flowing through my mind. I quickly recorded the words and have been the conduit of many words since then. The words that would comprise the poetry book were given to me in about 7 hours. Free-stylin’ into a tape recorder while on the road or asking someone to write while I spoke it and drove was common back then.
Nowadays, it’s not often that I’m without one of my many journals. The gift of poetry has inspired me to follow other artistic aspirations such as playing the bass guitar. I look forward to playing my bass while sharing the poetry.
The Book
